How you begin your morning shapes the entire rest of your day. In Ayurveda, the early hours are considered sacred – a time when the mind is still quiet, the energy is fresh, and your body is most receptive to nourishment. Spring is the perfect time to establish a morning routine (known as dinacharya) that supports clarity, energy, and vitality.
Start with Silence and Stillness
Before reaching for your phone, try spending just five minutes in stillness. This could be gentle breathing, meditation, or simply sitting quietly with a warm cup of herbal tea. Grounding yourself before the day begins helps regulate your nervous system and set an intentional tone. Even small moments of morning mindfulness can have a profound ripple effect on your stress levels and mood.
Oral Care the Ayurvedic Way
Two powerful Ayurvedic morning practices are tongue scraping and oil pulling. Tongue scraping removes the layer of ama that accumulates overnight, and it only takes 30 seconds. Oil pulling – swishing a tablespoon of sesame or coconut oil in your mouth for 5 to 10 minutes – supports oral health and is said to draw our deeper toxins. Follow both with a glass of warm water.
Move Your Body Mindfully
Spring is a wonderful time to add movement to your mornings. A gentle yoga flow, a brisk walk, or even a few sun salutations helps shake off morning Kapha heaviness and get your energy moving. Try to exercise before 10 AM when Kapha energy is at its peak and your body is most primed for activity. Keep it invigorating but not exhausting.
