How to Sleep Better with Ayurveda?

Sleep is one of the three pillars of health in Ayurveda — alongside food and energy management. Yet so many of us treat it as an afterthought, sacrificed to screens, stress, and endless to-do lists. If you have ever lain awake with a racing mind or woken up exhausted despite a full night in bed, Ayurveda offers a refreshingly grounded perspective: the quality of your sleep is a reflection of your overall balance.

The Ayurvedic View on Sleep

In Ayurveda, disturbed sleep is most often linked to excess Vata or Pitta. Vata-type sleep issues look like a busy, anxious mind that will not quiet down, or waking in the early hours (between 2 and 6am). Pitta-type sleep disturbances often involve waking in the middle of the night feeling hot, irritable, or with vivid, intense dreams. Understanding which dosha is involved helps you choose the right approach to restoring restful sleep.

Ayurvedic Bedtime Rituals for Deeper Sleep

Begin winding down by 9pm to align with the body’s natural rhythms. Try warm ashwagandha milk (also known as moon milk) about 30 minutes before bed — ashwagandha is an adaptogenic herb renowned for calming the nervous system and promoting restful sleep. Abhyanga (warm oil self-massage) with sesame oil on the feet and scalp is another time-honoured practice for grounding Vata and inviting stillness. Keeping your bedroom cool, dark, and technology-free makes a significant difference.

Evening Habits to Avoid

Ayurveda advises against stimulating activities in the evening — intense exercise, heated conversations, screens, and even mentally demanding work can all aggravate Vata and Pitta and make it harder to settle. Eat a light, early dinner, ideally before 7pm, to give your digestive system time to rest before sleep. Heavy, late meals are one of the most common contributors to restless nights.
