Hair loss, thinning, premature greying, and a dry, itchy scalp are among the most common concerns people bring to Ayurvedic practitioners – and for good reason. In Ayurveda, the health of your hair is a direct window into your internal health. Hair is considered a byproduct of bone tissue (asthi dhatu), and its quality reflects the nourishment flowing to your deepest tissues. If your hair is suffering, Ayurveda looks inward first.
What your hair is telling you
Dry, brittle, frizzy hair or a flaky scalp often points to a Vata imbalance — insufficient nourishment reaching the hair follicles. Premature greying and hair thinning can be linked to excess Pitta — heat and inflammation affecting the scalp and follicles. Oily scalp with slow growth may reflect a Kapha imbalance. Understanding which dosha is at the root of your hair concerns allows you to take a targeted, genuinely effective approach rather than treating symptoms superficially.
The power for Scalp massage
Shiro abhyanga — Ayurvedic scalp massage with medicated oils — is one of the most transformative practices for hair health. Warm oil applied to the scalp and massaged in circular motions stimulates blood flow to the follicles, nourishes the roots, calms the nervous system, and improves sleep. Bhringraj oil is the gold standard for hair in Ayurveda, often called the king of herbs for hair. It is traditionally used to reduce hair fall, stimulate growth, and slow premature greying. Brahmi and amla oils are also deeply nourishing.
Internal nourishment for lustrous hair
What you eat matters as much as what you apply. Amalaki (amla) is exceptionally rich in antioxidants and Vitamin C, and is one of Ayurveda’s most celebrated herbs for hair health — taken both internally and topically. Sesame seeds, ghee, soaked almonds, and leafy greens all nourish the bone tissue and support hair growth from within. Adequate hydration, sound sleep, and managing stress are equally important — chronic stress is one of the leading drivers of hair loss in Ayurveda and modern science alike.
